Storytelling for Researchers: Writing Exploration and application

Wednesday 4th November, 1pm - 5pm, The Learning Centre (room 00.018), The Schwarzman Centre
Storytelling for Researchers (Writing) workshop leader Robert Holtom

Storytelling is vital in academic writing. It helps us turn complex, abstract ideas into memorable, engaging narratives. It makes research more accessible, persuasive, and impactful. This can be applied to essays, theses, articles and beyond.

In the first half of the workshop we’ll explore three key elements of a great story – character, plot and detail. We’ll use these to craft our own short stories which we’ll share in pairs or trios. This will give us a robust understanding of how stories work, as well as boosting our creativity and confidence.

In the second half we’ll apply these storytelling skills to academic writing. Like a story, a good argument needs a clear structure and direction. We’ll analyse an article from The Conversation, looking at what works well and what could be improved.  Then we'll apply this learning to communicating about our own research. Beyond criticism, we'll explore supportive ways to edit and enhance our work.

Bookings will open on the 4th October.
